TMJ-TMD

What is Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)?

Millions of Americans experience chronic facial and neck pain, as well as recurring headaches. In some cases, these symptoms are related to temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your lower jaw to your skull. These joints are used constantly throughout the day for speaking, chewing, swallowing, and yawning. When problems occur in this area, they can cause discomfort and may even limit jaw movement.

Symptoms of TMD

TMD can present with a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw
  • Ear discomfort, ringing, or a feeling of fullness
  • Frequent headaches or neck pain
  • Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth
  • Swelling on the sides of the face
  • Muscle tension or spasms in the jaw
  • Changes in how your upper and lower teeth fit together
  • Jaw locking or difficulty opening the mouth fully

If you notice any of these symptoms, we encourage you to contact our office. Our team can evaluate your condition and recommend a personalized treatment plan.

Preventing and Managing TMD

There are several simple steps you can take to help reduce your risk of TMD or prevent symptoms from worsening:

  • Keep your jaw relaxed — remember: lips together, teeth apart
  • Avoid clenching or grinding your teeth
  • Limit gum chewing
  • Use a headset or hold your phone instead of cradling it between your shoulder and head
  • Chew food evenly on both sides of your mouth
  • Avoid resting your chin on your hand
  • Maintain good posture — keep your head upright, back straight, and shoulders relaxed
